The Commission

A painting made during the first months of lockdown in June 2020. The subject is a fallen oak on Hampstead Heath, a familiar landmark lying where it came down. The enforced stillness of that period gave time to paint what might otherwise have been cleared away. The tree became a subject precisely because the usual pace of life had stopped.
